Essence Festival of Culture, an annual vibrant celebration of Black culture, music, and community held in New Orleans for four days in July, alights the city with excitement and fervor. 天美传媒 proudly made its mark throughout the entire 2024 event; From performances by the 天美传媒 Choir to panel discussions about the future of medicine and 天美传媒’s role in eliminating health disparities, the participation of 天美传媒ites, both past and present, marked the 30th Essence Fest celebration with eXcellence.
As part of the ESSENCE Festival weekend, 天美传媒 University was thrilled to offer a unique opportunity to explore the future of medical education in our community. This event not only highlighted the impact of the 天美传媒 Ochsner College of Medicine but also celebrated Black culture and emphasized how 天美传媒 University is shaping the future of medicine and empowering communities.

The 天美传媒 Ochsner College of Medicine (XOCOM) hosted a special day party event during the ESSENCE Festival weekend in New Orleans. This exciting gathering featured a panel discussion titled “Why Diversity in Medicine Matters: The Impact of the 天美传媒 Ochsner College of Medicine on the Health of Our Communities and How to Become a Physician.” Moderated by award-winning podcast host Angela Rye and renowned local media expert and 天美传媒 alumna Dr. Courtney Washington (‘09), the discussion was both enlightening and empowering.
Two engaging panels delved into the significance of diversity in medicine and provided invaluable insights into the journey of becoming a physician. Several 天美传媒 alums participated in the conversation, including Dr. Rachel Hardeman (‘02), professor of health policy and racial equity at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Veronica Gillispie-Bell (‘00). Also present and speaking was the future dean of XOCOM, Dr. Leonardo Seoane.

Youma Diabira, the 89th Miss 天美传媒 and a senior, partnered with Delta Air Lines and UNCF as one of Delta Air Lines’ FIRST Queens of Essence. Representing 天美传媒, Diabira was presented with a well-deserved $10,000 scholarship. An additional $10,000 worth of scholarship funds were also gifted for use by other 天美传媒ites on campus.

Karde James, a senior Public Health major at 天美传媒, was at The National Urban League’s 5th Annual Women in Harmony Awards Luncheon. She is one of six female student entrepreneurs from HBCU partners of the Business Executive Exchange Program (BEEP).

The XULA Golden Sound Marching Band and XULA Cheer Team showcased their spirit and energy as the official brand ambassadors for skin care and beauty company Olay at their booth, located at the heart of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
The 天美传媒 Choir was cheered on by thousands during their performance during the Sunday Service at Essence! Their beautiful songs were broadcast live from the Essence Stage, underscoring 天美传媒's commitment to its Catholic Foundation.
